Well it seems that my life is a little bit "bigger" than I previously assumed, and it appears that I have found myself, shall we say...overwhelmed? If you know me, you know that I really don't like that feeling, and if you don't know me-- well then, there's a fun fact for you to start with.
This has to be at least the 8th blog I've attempted, but I have some faith going in to this one. It's nothing fancy-- just more extended thoughts on the more unusual or compelling incidents that I deem worthy of writing, er, TYPING about. So what do I have to write about? For starters, I'm going to start tutoring at my college next week, and this blog is going to be my Julie and Julia-esque contribution to the wonderful world that is the internet. And I should warn you, I may or may not be sending a letter on some notebook paper to a guy in Malawi that a friend of mine knows from like 5 years ago...so with some miraculous success on the side of the post office in Africa, I might be writing about anything that happens concerning that particular subject. And last, but not least, I "get" to start seeing a counselor (read: "shrink") this week...I think I'm depressed, and at the very least I don't want to finish my first year of college having cried 4 out of 7 nights a week. So, what happens when a snarky redhead goes to the counselor to talk about her feelings? Stick around and you will most certainly find out.
Well just to get something out there for tonight, I have some thoughts on words, as related to tutoring. So I read a sample of this guy's work who will be my first tutoring "victim" (really, what else are they called..."personbeingtutored"? "tutoree"? tell me if you think of something better). Anyways, this guy's spelling was bad to the point of I was getting confused as to what he was talking about, and I thought to myself...when he talks, his spelling's not bad. So I'm wondering, just how much power is in our written language? Like, how many troubles will this guy encounter in life just because he can't spell? It seems like as a society we're so much in to "accepting people with different gifts," but in the end, we'll still rely on what we can write. The written language is what gets a culture through history, and what we write is what we share...in both time AND space.
So there it is. If somebody's actually reading this, please say something.
So what's the plan for this weekend? Homeowrk. Really, what else is there?
